Throughout her lifetime, Dr. Nina I. McClelland (1929-2020) was a relentless advocate for public health, a pioneer in drinking water safety. and a leader in STEM and academia.
Nina received her BS, MS, and an Honorary Doctorate from The University of Toledo, and her MPh and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She began her career with the City of Toledo as a chemist and bacteriologist. After receiving her Ph.D., she joined the National Sanitation Foundation, in 1968, becoming Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer from 1980 to 1995. After NSF, she founded Nina I. McClelland, LLC, Consulting Services and returned to the University of Toledo in 2003 as the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences until 2011. In her retirement, Nina served as Chairman Emeritus at NSF, and Dean Emerita and Executive-In-Residence at UT.
Nina was a highly respected world leader in chemistry, water quality, and issues related to the environment. She championed public health initiatives to raise the quality of public drinking water and thus, improved the quality of lives worldwide.
Nina's aunt and uncle, the late Fern & Nick Mervos, were long-time members of Zion Church, and in their memory, Nina made a significant bequest to Zion in her estate. To honor Nina and her work, our community market and food pantry is named for her.
